The approach of the practice builds on experience which is as much about completed projects than the best course to procure them. This last issue is so critical that it requires to assess the real world contributions of one particular organisation of the studies and choice of procurement route against another method.
In this respect, UBD Studio offers
  • A consistent arbitration between project objectives to realise them in practice; this arbitration begins from the initial considerations, through the objectivity and sincerity of the diagnosis.
  • A role as a coordinator and integrator of multidisciplinary work, going beyond mere data aggregation; This role becomes even more relevant with the digital model;
  • An ability to establish constructive and beneficial connections with engineering;
  • A shared goal: every project is embedded in a specific territory, with its material and social dimensions. The relevance and acceptability of the project depend on the quality of interactions with the local context.
  • A credible connection with contractors is established through the thoroughness and consistency of the project documentation, in alignment with the project's objectives.
  • A proactive force in complex project situations and an ability to grasp architectural and urban challenges within the various logics influencing them, relying, as needed, on a specialised partner.
Project running
Our working method is based in practice on project support tools, project development and control protocols (especially those of the MAF) with the necessary objective of maintaining the balance between productive tasks and unproductive tasks. We fulfill our duty of CPD (continuing professional development) in a number of ways : undertaking short courses, attending conferences, seminars, keeping abreast of government policies and new technical reports ; we also record the content of guidelines issued weekly by our insurer (MAF, the historical and leading insurer in France) and professional bodies in France (CNOA/CROAIF) and the UK (ARB/RIBA).
The internal tools, in the form of an IT structure concerned with simplicity of access, are made up of a collection of "referent prototypes" by topic: (technical admin for each phase, standard contracts and contracts carried out, full contents of project files data, schedules, price banks), a “Regulations and professional framework” library (including access to “Batipédia” from CSTB), a “Manufacturers and building systems” library, a manual of common rules for document management (excluding BIM question).
Our project development and control protocols are adapted to the specifics of the project (new or renovation) as well as to the form of procurement of the design team and contractors. We have established methodologies corrected by experience and hindsight from the professional environments in which we have participated.
